When a laugh is NOT appropriate...

Writer: Liz SimpersLiz Simpers

Have you ever been a work situation where laughing is NOT appropriate, but like: YOU JUST CAN'T HELP IT?!

Add a work friend in the mix and one glance means...that shake laughing where you have to be quiet but your body is not able to physically hold in the laughter shakes.

Well...here's my short story.

The scene: When TOMS started the "One Day Without Shoes" walk, we were all over it at the YMCA of the Triangle.I guess this was in 2012 or so. You know, the peak of the "philanthropy is good for business" model. Because, it REALLY IS.

So, I am presenting the plan to promote One Day Without Shoes. And instead of saying "should start" I said "should shart." Immediately, in front of a room of a hundred plus big wigs (whatever that means), I paused and thought to myself: "Does shart mean shit fart, or is it the past tense of shit? But is that shat?"

And THEN I thought: "why aren't you talking? Everyone is staring at you while you debate the origin of shart. SAY SOMETHING!"

Unfortunately for me, my co-workers were there. SHAKE LAUGHING at this public speaking debacle. But as I look back on it? I love that moment. I love embarrassing moments and they are often a get-to-know-you question I have for people because it makes us all human.

Secret? We are ALL human. And laughter is awesome for those of us that think we are bad asses and big wigs and have important letters before or after our names.

The next time you interact with staff, remember that. With or without degrees and letters, everyone is valuable and awesome.

Sincerely,

Dr. Liz Simpers, MD, PLC, PYT, LMFAO
