We've all been there. You are tasked to give a presentation to your board. Or your staff. Or your biggest clients. Or maybe it's the annual sales meeting or fiscal year kick-off woo hoo event.
I have been under-prepared for such things and I have been overly-prepared for such things. And a word of caution: that room, no matter how big it is, can sniff out both of those extremes as not entirely - real.
You know what I find refreshing? Someone with a microphone and a task to motivate the room that admits she doesn't have all the answers. I love the guy that finishes the pep talk or the strategic plan or the board orientation and is the same guy that he was when he had a mic in hand and a powerpoint clicker.
Don't be so underprepared that you forget why you are there. But whatever you do, be yourself. Be flawed, be humble, and be willing to accept that in others. After all, when the speaking engagement is over, you are going home to your family and you will be much more helpful if you - are you. Both personally AND professionally. Because chances are, that's why you got the assignment in the first place.
