How territorial are you REALLY?

I mean, I get it. Your space is your space. Your stapler is your stapler. Your lunch in the community fridge is your lunch.

Your staff is your staff.

Wait a minute.

If we are all VERY honest...we likely don't want our team to move on to the next opportunity. Hiring someone new actually is the WORST and we all know it. Recruiting great employees has never been harder and people are leaving jobs faster and faster.

You can cut statistics any way you like from job sectors, gender, and age, but even in your BEST case scenarios (and check ChatGPT for clarification) - you might get someone for 4 years if you are lucky.

That's it? 4 years? Well let me tell you: freshman year I was lost. Sophomore year I was too busy making friends with the seniors. Junior year I got my license and I was prepping for college (aka the next job) and senior year? Well, senior year, I was checked out.

That translates, doesn't it?

It is hard to dig in to our staff and treat them like family when we know family is likely to leave by junior year. But if this is the trend, can we stop it?

My best advice? Loosen your grip. Let people leave, and don't take it personally (as we all do). Company culture is the number one reason people leave, and also the number one reason people stay.
